Servants of Science formed in Brighton, England in 2017 when Stuart Avis presented Andy Bay with some keyboard ideas to add guitar to. The pair have been playing music together on and off for 20 years. Stuart: "Andy is my right hand man when it comes to making music, he seems to instinctively know what I'm after and always delivers, we share a lot of musical tastes, it helps that he's such an accomplished musician and a cool, laid back guy too". Once the ideas started turning into songs it became apparent someone would need to sing them. Stuart: "This was a no brainer, Neil Beards and I had collaborated on stage within an hour or 2 of knowing each other back in 2006 and hit it off. We did some occasional collaborations online after, again we share a lot of musical tastes, I knew this would be right up his street and he'd be perfect for it having become a fan of his own band - The Amber Herd. I sent Neil some demos with me singing, he then totally transformed the songs with his own unique and amazing vocal which took everything up several levels". As the story for the debut album, "The Swan Song", started to evolve, a female character was introduced. Stuart: "I'd worked with Helena DeLuca on a cover version for another project the year before and it was just the easiest and most fun session I'd ever recorded with a vocalist. She came in loaded with ideas and an incredible, unique voice full of personality, there was no question as to who I wanted to sing the female vocal parts". The final piece of the puzzle was replacing the programmed drums on the original recording. Andy and Stuart had played in bands with Adam McKee for 20 years, a fun, vibrant personality who's perfect for those lengthy rehearsal sessions when you're shut away in a room playing the same songs for hours, damn good drummer too.
